However under King Leopold's authority he has control over the resources and people who come into Congo. The king ruled for over thirty years, during his reign of terror. Overtime, roughly half of the population of people died in forced labor camps. The economy was in total ruins by that time.
However, fifty years later after years of oppression, slave labor and the denial of rights, Congo was granted independence in 1960. Even though, Congo was left independent there government was going to be left unstable for sometime. According to the CIA, prime minister Patrice Lumumba was assassinated weeks after independence. Just five years later, Mobutu seized power of Congo. He used up the country's resources for his own gain, making him very wealthy. |

As a result, Congo is at war and there will be no peace. Genocide is the result of the downfall of Congo's government. In fact, Congo was already rapidly deteriorating in jobs, healthcare, and in education. Today's conflicts originate from the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. However, somebody else was going to take control, that somebody is a general who spent twenty years under exile.
The general sent troops to the other countries at war hoping to keep Congo in peace. In addition, the general promised Rwanda to provide them with profitable access to the country's resources. This however enraged Rwanda leading to an all-out-war against The Republic of Congo. The war lasted for quite a while. It's all thanks to the MONUSCO, the largest UN peace keeping organization.
